Why Mental Percentage Math Matters
You're at a restaurant, figuring out a tip. You're at a sale, calculating the discounted price. You're in a meeting, estimating growth figures. A phone isn't always handy — but your brain always is. These tricks will make percentage calculations feel effortless.
Trick 1: Use 10% as Your Building Block
Finding 10% of any number is simple: just move the decimal point one place to the left.
- 10% of 250 = 25
- 10% of 83 = 8.3
From there, you can build almost any percentage:
- 20% = double the 10% figure
- 5% = half the 10% figure
- 15% = add 10% + 5%
- 30% = triple the 10% figure
Trick 2: Flip the Percentage and the Number
Percentages are commutative: X% of Y = Y% of X
So 8% of 25 is the same as 25% of 8. Which is easier? 25% of 8 = 2. Done! Use this when one version is much simpler to calculate.
Trick 3: Find 1% First, Then Scale
To find 1%, move the decimal two places to the left. Then multiply by whatever percentage you need.
- 1% of 360 = 3.6
- 7% of 360 = 3.6 × 7 = 25.2

For a 15% tip: find 10%, add half of that.

For a 20% tip: just double the 10%.

For a 25% off sale: find the price, divide by 4, subtract.
